Brun - Caveman

Update! So I finally managed to finish my caveman! It's been a fun ride, learned a ton, but it's time to move on to new projects. Meet Brun, the caveman who found some old caveman drawings of people bowling. So he decided to carve out his own bowlingball to see what the fuss is about. ZBrush, Maya, Vray, Photoshop.

Futuristic Cop Render

So I started to retopo this guy using Topogun. Along the way changed some poportions and design elements mainly because I want it to be a suit that could actually function. As you can see he's still quite 'naked' in some areas. Working on it. Quick first render. Nothing special, using hdri and vray.

Caveman old

I went back in ZBrush and played some more with fibremesh. I love it! I did however export .obj´s of the hairs instead of exporting curves driving a hair system in Maya. Need to look into that. So he´s aged a bit since last time, but I think it suits him better with his current build and details. Next stop needs to be the cave!

Caveman haircut

He's got some hair! First pass with fibermesh... Still a little too 'groomed' for a caveman, will need to rough him up a little.
More to come!

Caveman texture

So I went back to texturing this bad boy and gave him a complete overhaul. I think I'll work from here. Texturing is first pass so more details will surface... I also changed the camera framing so it will be clearer to tell my story. Next thing we'll be it's environment. Quick comp:

Masterclass Kris Costa

It's been way too long since my last post, but I've been quite busy with an online masterclass character creation at Visualarium taught by the great Kris (Antropus) Costa. Like the name of the course implies each student was asked to create a character from scratch and follow a 10 week step-by-step program setup by Kris Costa.
Even though the course is over, this is still a work in progress. It has been a great course and will show some more renders soon!

Batbuggy Dune

I added lots of new details. Worked on new tires, new rims, front suspension and a new engine compartment. I now have to come up with a suitable rear suspension and proper chassis.
Sand (dune) is temporary. Just as a reference for its final surroundings. More to come...

Batman Buggy Assembled

Reworked the overall shapes of the entire car, finetuning, adding detail, balancing out the proportions. All the major parts are in place. Now it's time for finer detailing, figuring out the mechanics and adding those big suspensions.
The engine is still quite a puzzle, because I want the engine compartment to be open and the engine exposed.
Wheels and rims are still temp. They're going to be reworked.

Batman Badass

Worked some more on the body, redefining shapes - adding details. Trying to figure out how to make the back work, fitting the engine in and hooking up the thrusters.
Not too happy with the rims and wheels. They seem to 'rc'/ cartoony. Need to fix that.

Batman Buggy Update

Refined the shapes overall. Used the concept as a base for all the newly modeled body parts.
Also started working on the thrust engine and 'pulse' generator.
I still have to figure out how to make the thrusters and engine work, but I'll get to that later...

Batman Buggy

I came across some pictures of the latest Batmobile; the Tumbler. Always been a fan of that design, I decided to make a beach buggy Batman style... I first did three quick sculpts, blocking out rough shapes with simple geometry. It's a great way of getting a good look at proportions, weight, scale and whether there's some appeal to the design.
I felt concept 3 would stay true to the Batman design and could look most badass! So I'm going to continue with this one...
More to come!

World Nature Fund

It's been a while since the last update, but I've been kept quite busy at work with a commercial for World Nature Fund. My duties involved a lot of modeling and texturing as well as animation. Sadly during production the style of some shots were changed, which meant abandoning a lot of models I already created. Aside from high res models of various plants and flowers, I also modeled a digital double of the model which was used for tracking, placing of the tears/ plants and shadow casting.

Greek God texturing

So I decided to give this guy some texture work and this is how it stands now.

Texture painting done in Mudbox. Rendered in Maya Mental Ray with area lights.

Still tweaking some displacement (details) on the model, texturing the pedestal and trying to find the right background...

Greek God

While visiting Berlin some time ago, I went to a museum of natural history where they had a section of Greek art including several sculptures. No description was found, but I took some reference shots of this bust as an inspiration. Still work in progress.
